Hair Conditioning Treatment - What's ItAll About

Hair Conditioning Treatment - What's ItAll About

Many people get confused between a normal conditioner that we use after shampooing our hair and a hair conditioning treatment. These are not the same and although they are both called conditioners, they work in different ways.

A conditioner that is applied after shampooing and then rinsed out is really only used to make the hair easier to comb, to provide the hair with a protective coating which will to minimise damage to the hair and to make the hair look shiny and feel soft and silky. A hair conditioning treatment on the other hand will do all this and more.

Not everyone needs to use a conditioner or a hair conditioning treatment. If your hair his particularly oily for example, and is healthy looking and manageable then there's no need to apply a conditioner or a hair conditioning treatment. In fact doing so could have the opposite effect on the look of the hair and end up weighing it down making it look flat and even oilier.

However, for dry hair or even hair that is partly dry (combination hair type), using a conditioner after shampooing is important and for damaged hair a regular conditioning treatment on top of normal conditioning is essential if you want your hair to look as good as it can.

What will a conditioning treatment do?

A conditioning treatment is designed to penetrate deeply into the hair shaft and to smooth down the cuticles. When the cuticles are raised, the hair can appear dry and frizzy and when the cuticles are flattened out, the hair appears silky and soft. The main difference between a normal hair conditioner and a hair conditioning treatment is that a normal hair conditioner will only work on the surface of the hair by leaving a fine film over the hair shaft whereas a hair conditioning treatment will get right inside the hair shaft and attempt to repair damage.

An important misconception here surrounding damaged hair is that no hair conditioning treatment is ever going to fully repair damaged hair but it will go a long way to minimising any further damage and to disguising damage that is already there. There is really no solution to severely damaged hair other than to cut the hair and make sure that the hair is cared for in future to prevent that damage happening again.

What causes damage to the hair?

Normal every day life will take its toll on the hair which is why a good hair care regime using mild protein enriched products and a good conditioner is important. The following represents a list of just some of the things that without a good hair care routine could over time turn a beautiful head of hair into hair that looks dry, dull and completely lifeless.

Frequent shampooing
Overuse of hairdryers, curling tongs, hair straighteners and heated rollers
Exposure to wind and sun
Extreme changes of temperature
Chemicals in hair products such as bleaches, perming lotions, relaxers and hair dyes
Tugging and pulling at the hair when trying to comb the hair
Using elastic bands to tie the hair up
A diet lacking in essential nutrients required for healthy hair

The solution of course is fairly obvious. Avoid as much as possible anything that is going to damage the hair further and make sure that loss of moisture is replaced by a good conditioner and a regular conditioning treatment.

How to apply a hot oil hair conditioning treatment

If you want to give your hair a regular deep hair conditioning treatment then look for a good quality product that is suitable for your particular hair type or hair problem or consider making your own.

You can use vegetable oils such as Jojoba which acts in much the same way that sebum works, which is the body's own natural moisturiser, or olive oil, sunflower oil or coconut oil and add a few of drops of your favourite essential oil. Rosemary, Lavender and Chamomile are all popular and can be found in many hair products due to the beneficial effect that these oils can have on the hair.

After shampooing your hair gently heat the oil treatment either by following the instructions on the package or heating your own blend on the stove. Be very careful to check the temperature of the oil before you apply it to the hair as oil can become extremely hot very quickly. When the oil is warm, follow the instructions on the product package or if you're using your own blend, apply the oil to your towel dried hair carefully making sure that each hair strand is covered. Wrap your hair up in a towel and leave the oil on for 20 minutes or so or even longer before gently washing out the oil treatment.

H.E. BATES' THE OX - WHY THIS TITLE

H.E. BATES THE OX WHY THIS TITLE
Henry Miller wrote in the Preface of H.E. Bates selection of stories Seven By Five (1963) that Bates with an obsession with pain. Pain stretched to breaking point, pain prolonged beyond all seeming endurance yet not by any means beyond the bounds of possibility. One of H.E. Bates great strength is to show a manly and unsentimental pity for those that suffer alone.

The Ox is a story of Mrs. Thurlow who suffers pain to the limits of endurance and bears her pain as well as life with the fortitude of an ox. Herein lies the justification of the title. More than one time Mrs. Thurlow has been compared to an ox. Mrs Thurlow was a washerwoman. At half past seven every morning she pushed her great rusty bicycle down the hill, and pushed it back at six in the evening, loaded with grey bundles of washing, oilcans, sacks, cabbages, old newspapers. She never rode the bicycle but always pushed it. Her relation to the bicycle was like that of a beast to a cart. She was the ox pulling the cart. Slopping along its side, her flat heavy feet pounding painfully along under mudstained skirt. Her face and body ugly with lumpy angles of bone she was like a beast of burden.

All day long she worked for a number of people, washing and cleaning. She never went beyond her regular boundary. She never thought about herself. In an oxlike way she thought about her two sons. She was ambitious for them, that they would become established. She had washed and scrubbed for fifteen years and had saved money for them. She kept it in a bag under her mattress. All the time she saved money religiously. Sometimes when she had no cleaning, she picked and planted potatoes, cabbages, roots peas, did more washing. Everyday she washed and ironed. She worked by candlelight. At night she folded clothes or cleaned boots. All along with an ox like fortitude she saved money. She had saved fifty four pounds. Every night she counted her money. It was an ox like obsession she had. She worked in the fields with her skirt pinned up like a tail looking like a bony ox.

She had one relaxation. On Sunday afternoons she read the newspapers. She read about wonderful things but her face remained ox like in its impassivity. She worked and saved emotionless like an ox except her one obsession.

Mr. Thurlow had a silver plate in his head. He often boasted about it. He had a bill hook. Her world crashed when one day Mr. Thurlow came with blood on his hands. He had committed a murder. He left the house with Mrs. Thurlows savings. Mrs. Thurlow was not concerned about her husband. She only cared for the money, her sons future. The money was missing. She told the police about it. The loss of her money brought her to the edge of distress. It symbolized the future. She moved about ponderous, flatfooted and unhurried, resolutely like an ox. But her future was destroyed. When her husband did not return she walked resolutely four miles to the next village. She held her bicycle firmly because she felt a sense of security and fortitude holding it. She went to her brother who was a master carpenter and talked to them about keeping her sons. Her sons hated the cheapness of Mrs. Thurlows home. They departed to live with their uncle.

Mrs. Thurlow was informed that her husband had been found. She went to the police station. She walked in heavily like an ox. She hardly registered anything. The only thing she asked when she met her husband was if she knew anything about the money. But he could not remember. The one hope that Mrs. Thurlow had also came to an end.

Mrs. Thurlow went back to her work with the resoluteness of an ox. I got my cleaning to do. I got to pick up my bicycle. She returned to her work and felt a return of security. She went back to reality. But she was oppressed by a sense of duty. She resumed her duty expressionless like an ox. She suffered the pain in silence, she felt bitterness, her life was a suffering. She pushed the bicycle back and forth each day in the same ox like manner, her heavy feel slopping dully beside it.

She still had one hope, her boys. She hoped they would return to her. She went to her brother to bring them back. But they had liked the comfort of their uncles home. They did not want to return to the discomfort of their home. So they refused to return. Mrs. Thurlow stood still, with the crushed core of her optimism and faith. As she returned with her bicycle the tyre gave way with a faint hiss. Ox like she struggled up the hill. Her life had come to a standstill. No hope remained for her. But still she struggled on like an ox. She was the beast of burden bearing her pain in silence.

Green Technology Information What You May Know, Not Know, And Dont Want To Know

Green technology is often referred to as clean technology, environmental technology, or sustainable technology. Regardless of what you label it, the basics of it are where environmental science is applied with the intention of conserving the environment and minimizing mankinds footprint on it.

The applications are widespread when it comes to environmental technology and yet many ways, we still lack doing enough. The applications used are sometimes as simple as upgrading our appliances and installing energy saving lighting or doing more complex things like building recycling facilities, installing climate monitoring systems and using air filtering devices. All of which take a lot of manpower and money.

Being Environmentally Conscious

For the most part, people now are pretty much aware of the things they do or dont do that are harmful to the environment. Human activities have caused many ecological problems that have, in some opinions, caused a crisis. On the top of the list is global warming, deforestation, and nuclear energy danger.

The popular motto of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and has been around for a few decades now. It was coined by environmental groups as an effort to make the public more consciousness of what we do and dont do. If we cant reduce, then we need to reuse or recycle things. However, it has become so commonplace, perhaps it now falls on deaf ears.

Today, the motto that environmentalist hope to regenerate the publics attention is Go Green as in regards to our consumption of things we buy and things we do. The focus on being environmentally conscious is now geared more to buying energy-efficient appliances and lighting as opposed to just simply turning off the lights when not in use. The amount of different green technology gadgets that are on the market today can make a contribution to the go green efforts.

The Renewable Resource Concept

If you arent familiar with the term renewable resources, then you have been living in a cave or under a rock. This is where we are encouraged to use resources that can be easily renewed and not deplete what Mother Earth has given us. The thought being that in time, these resources we have will become gone and unworkable eventually.

If an activity is allowed to continue on for a long period of time, it can become destructive, including the use of certain pieces of green technology. As such, it will obliterate the environment that surrounds it, and that in turn, will harm any life form that depends on that part of the environment. Hence, human activity, then, is no longer sustainable when it depletes or destroys the ecosystem that surrounds it.

What Does This Information Mean To You?

We need to understand that environmental destruction isnt just about killing wildlife or spoiling bucolic vistas. However, and unfortunately, the ecological crisis that many believe we are currently in is more severe than we may realize.

Too many of us have either forgotten or ignored the resources that have been recognized and regarded by the AMNH (American Museum of Natural History) as well as the United Nations have agreed upon. Some experts tell us that we, as humans, are in the midst of the 6th major mass extinction. When you consider that approximately 2/3 of any and all species were gone after the last great extinction almost 65 million years ago, it is a scary thought.

These same experts will tell you that the human species has manufactured an extinction that is comparable to that one. They estimate that approximately 50,000 species could be lost each year and by the year 2100, it is possible that 2/3 of the current species on Earth will have either disappear or will soon be extinct.

So What Should We Do?

Practice all the things weve heard over the past few decades. Go green by recycling and reusing.  All of that will reduce the waste. We only have one Mother Earth. There isnt another one coming along, or not that any of us know about anyway.  Take care of what we have today so well have it tomorrow and many more tomorrows.

Green Pool Water Cure In 24 Hours

Green Pool Water

Owning a pool can be a lot of fun. However, when the once-inviting, clear water turns green, though, that is a whole other story. Green pool water can turn your pool from a great place to take a dip into an unappealing pond - and it is one of the most common complaints and issues raised by pool owners. Fortunately, having green pool water is a temporary problem and is not too difficult to manage. Read on to find out how to get rid of green pool water - and how to keep it from happening in the first place.

What Causes Green Pool Water?

To cut right to the chase, green pool water is algae infestation that has bloomed and is now thriving due to the water condition. A so-called "algae bloom" can turn your pool water from clear to green overnight. Despite your best efforts to do what you think is right, your pool might suddenly exhibit green water. It is important to keep in mind that green pool water does not just spontaneously occur for any good reason; the usual culprit behind an algae bloom is imbalanced pH levels in the water or lack of maintaining the proper sanitizer level.

Under optimal circumstances, the pH level of the water in your pool should be between 7.4 and 7.6. Although the pH level is acceptable within the range of 7.2 to 7.8, this should not be your target when bringing it into balance. The desire or ideal pH level is 7.4 to 7.6. When the pH level gets excessively high or excessively low, the chlorine that is supposed to keep algae at bay does not work as effectively. Just because you are adding, chlorine to your pool does not mean that the chlorine is doing its job. Chlorine requires optimal pH levels to do its very important work, so letting the pH level get unbalanced can cause teeming levels of algae in your pool. Pool chemicals alone cannot maintain water clarity and safety. The other component is proper water circulation. Clean the skimmer and pump baskets. Backwash, clean or regenerate you pool filter; depending on the filter type you have, to ensure that it is capable of performing optimum filtration without starving for water or impeding the flow.

How To Get Rid of Green Pool Water

If your pool water has turned green, there is a faster, more effective method of treatment that you should follow to remedy the situation. Do not think that if you buy algaecide and apply allot of it that it will get rid of the algae. It will not, so save your money. Based on what we learned above, the first thing you need to do is measure the pH level of your pool's water. If your pH tests too high (above 7.6), use pH decreaser (granular sodium bisulfate or liquid muriatic acid) to lower it. If the pH is too low (below 7.4), use pH increaser (granular sodium carbonate, soda ash) to raise it.

After addressing and adjusting any pH level imbalance, brush the sides and bottom of the pool thoroughly to loosen any attached algae. Add liquid or granular chlorine to the water - in other words, "shock" it with "six times" the weekly maintenance dose of chlorine your pool requires to super chlorinate. Administer this large shock dose all at one time. The recommended shock dose required for weekly maintenance for a clear pool is 1-lb. or 1-gallon of full strength pool shock per 10,000 gallons of pool water to achieve proper super chlorination (5 to 10ppm). The reason we specify "full strength" shock is so that you will now become aware that there are pool shock treatments sold, primarily by mass merchants, which contain far less than a full strength 65% calcium hypochlorite and therefore will require over twice as much product to achieve the expected result. Next, run the filtration system for a minimum of twenty-four hours straight; this will help circulate the chlorine in order to kill off and oxidize the algae as efficiently and effectively as possible. The next day, vacuum the pool thoroughly in order to get rid of any remaining algae. If after circulating a minimum of 24 hours and the pool is not yet clear, test the chlorine level. If the chlorine level is low, you still need to add an additional couple of pounds or gallons of shock to complete the cure because the contaminant level was very high.

Preventing Green Pool Water

Like most pool problems, the key to avoiding green pool water is simple: regular weekly pool water testing for proper pH and primary sanitizer levels and then addressing imbalances promptly. Develop a pool care "routine" that requires shocking the pool with the right amount of chlorine for your pool capacity on the same day once per week. If you experience periods of heavy rain or excessive heat, you may have to shock your pool more frequently. By developing a pool care routine and running the filter enough each day, you can avoid algae blooms and other many other pool water problems. Many pool owners find it beneficial to add an algaecide to their weekly pool care routine. Algaecides and algaestats are primarily for algae prevention, rather than for a cure to existing algae bloom. They provide a second-line of defense against algae and reoccurring pool algae. Remember that owning a pool does not mean working hard to keep it in great shape - Maintain a minimum of 1-3ppm of chlorine residual at all times and develop a weekly pool care routine. Do not miss your day to shock the pool. It will require only minutes of your time each week to stay ahead of potential pool problems and prevent green pool water.

Goal Setting Advantage - Legend or logic Part 4 of 4

Goal Setting Advantage - Legend or logic Part 4 of 4

In the first three parts of this series we have looked at goal setting, the process and the real research behind this to find out what makes a difference.

It seems that there is considerable support for the idea of SMART goals, yet there are still some issues with what the goal is. Is it an outcome or about performance?

Outcome goals - some issues

The problem facing many people with regard to 'Outcome' goals is that there is an element that is outside the power of the individual. An example of the potential issues with an 'outcome' goal comes from a rather sad testimony from one particular research participant:

"My goal was to have $3 million in the bank for my retirement by age 55. I achieved my goal with great satisfaction early at age 43. Unfortunately my bank was at the centre of a fraud and went under. 16 years later, I am still working and slowly rebuilding my goal. So, goals are important and we need to know what we want to achieve in life - just choose a goal only including yourself and don't leave all of it in one place."

Outcome goals are most often subject to others and to the environment. The greater the attainability of a goal through yourself only - I.e. Your own performance - the more you are in control of goal achievement.

Goals that have a high dependence on others and/or external circumstances are considerably more difficult to influence. As an extreme example, one survey participant has goal to win the lottery! Now there are certain things that you can do to increase the likelihood of this becoming reality, buying tickets is a useful component, but how many? Interestingly, another participant who had a 'money' goal did indeed achieve their goal - through winning the lottery! Though that wasn't the original plan and they rated themselves 'somewhat satisfied' in having completely achieved their goal. Whilst touching on monetary goals, another participant reminds us that being specific about your goal is important:

"My goal was to be a millionaire by 35... I achieved it the moment I stepped away from the foreign exchange counter at Jakarta airport!"

Following up with our survey participants revealed commonality in the way they went about setting goals and their subsequent actions to achieve their goals. We've already seen how those with the greatest success in terms of personal wealth had SMART goals. This isn't to say that success can only be measured by means of personal wealth at all - the original intention was simply to test the mythical Yale Study results. And, of course, someone could have set themselves a perfectly good SMART goal - but due to their own environment, had not accumulated as much personal wealth in terms of a standard currency - indeed, a person could have less in terms of monetary wealth yet be considerably better off in terms of the value they can obtain from less money.

Performance goals

An interesting aspect that began to show itself through the results was personal satisfaction in goal achievement.

People who set 'Ability' type goals, or 'Performance' goals reported to be 'very satisfied' with their achievements - whether completely achieved goals or not yet complete.

In part, this suggests the importance of personal values and suggests a question about the process by which they set goals. Through a random selection of fifty respondents we found that there is some commonality in the manner in which goals are set:

When we compare the groups of 'Very Satisfied' with their achievement and 'Satisfied' or 'Somewhat Satisfied' with their achievement. The first group were more likely to have SMART goals. The goal is described in sensory terms - what will be seen, heard and felt, and for a small number, smelt and tasted. Respondents were clear about what achieving the goal will do positively for them and the cost to themselves (and others) of achieving their goal. Their goal, they considered personally stretching yet 'knew' that they were capable of achieving it themselves.

More than 60% stated their goal in the present tense - 'I am' rather than 'I will be'. This provides a template for a useful goal-setting process that we've turned into an easy-to-remember acronym: SWING.

Goal setting process

1. A SMART and Sensory performance goal.

2. What will I positively Win and lose.

3. Am I In control of achieving this goal?

4. Stated as Now.

5. Guarantee - this is an added psychological process to ensure personal motivation towards achieving the goal.

Final thoughts

From our survey, those individuals who set performance goals using slight variations of this process represent a small, though statistically significant fraction of the sample that have a net higher annualised personal wealth accumulation (2.15 times) and are more satisfied than individuals who use only one or two aspects of this process. It is not the writing down of the goal that makes the difference, it seems to be the emphasis on performance or ability and the process of thinking through the goal.

And for those of you, like me, who just didn't get round to setting goals way back and worry that you might have missed out - well you can't go back and revise history, but you can create a new one now.
